Restoring Water, Reviving Lives
In Basti Shekh Wala, District Dera Ghazi Khan, recurring floods and heavy rains had damaged irrigation channels for years, disrupting water access for more than 300 rural families. As water supplies declined, farming suffered, household incomes weakened, and communities faced growing health risks linked to unsafe water.
Under the PPAF’s Restoring Social Services and Climate Resilience initiative, a 700-foot-long irrigation channel was rehabilitated through desilting and repair works completed within two months. Local farmers and labourers actively contributed labour and resources throughout the process, strengthening community ownership from the very beginning.
Today, the restored channel is once again supplying water to nearly 200 acres of farmland, improving crop yields and supporting more stable household incomes. Access to cleaner water has also contributed to reducing health-related risks in the area.
Beyond restoring water flow, the initiative has strengthened community cooperation around water management and maintenance. It has also encouraged residents to explore new livelihood opportunities, including vegetable cultivation and fish farming, paving the way for greater long-term resilience and economic stability.
