Funded by the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW and implemented by the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) since 2013, the Hydro Power and Renewable Energy (HRE) Project transforms remote off-grid communities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 2,155 households were benefited throug these projects. Implemented through specialized partner organizations including AKRSP, NRSP, SRSP, CMDO, and SABAWON the initiative focuses on two core clean energy components: Mini/Micro Hydropower Projects and Solar Mini-Grid Systems. To ensure long-term sustainability, the project expanded under the DKTI German Climate-Technology Initiative, delivering community operational training, additional household connections, solar water pumps, and tree plantation drives across project locations.

The project’s infrastructure delivers life-changing energy access and socio-economic benefits to marginalized populations across Chitral, Upper Dir, Buner, Karak, Swabi, and Lakki Marwat. Five hydro plants (800+ kW total capacity) provide continuous electricity for domestic heating, cooking, and local commercial enterprises, while 68 Solar Mini-Grid Systems (493.52 kW total capacity) power remote homes and village businesses. Beyond electricity, the initiative has completed 3 solar drinking water supply schemes benefiting 1,337 residents (52% women) and engaged local communities to plant over 56,596 indigenous and fruit trees, creating lasting environmental and economic impact.
