Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) in collaboration with the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP) is uplifting the most marginalized rural communities in Balochistan, including the livelihood initiatives in three districts of the province and the immediate earthquake disaster relief assistance in district Harnai.
A distribution ceremony was held at the Governor House in Quetta to mark the continued support under the Government of Pakistan’s (GoP) flagship Ehsaas Amdan programme. On this occasion, relief assistance was also handed out to families severely impacted by the earthquake which hit district Harnai in early October. Distributing assets and relief assistance to the beneficiaries, the Governor Balochistan Mr. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Agha said, “The government of Balochistan is committed to the sustainable development and prosperity of the province. We are working for the welfare of rural communities, especially in the most deprived regions of the province through collective efforts of the government and non-government stakeholders. I’d like to commend the efforts of PPAF, BRSP and PDMA on their robust response to the recent earthquake in Harnai and their ambition to fight poverty.”
While addressing the ceremony, the Secretary, Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division (PASSD) Mr. Muhammad Ali Shahzada said, “Our prime focus is to transfer assets to the beneficiaries in order to make them self-sufficient and improve their livelihood. Ministry for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division is committed to alleviate poverty throughout country and the Government has disbursed PKR 5 billion to Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) to achieve this objective for which PPAF is going to work with its partner organizations with BRSP as its important member.”
Also present on the occasion, PPAF’s newly appointed Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Nadir Gul Barech said, “I am grateful to the Honorable Governor Balochistan who has always extended his support whenever it was needed. Balochistan is the poorest of all provinces. I have worked for 15 years at BRSP and have joined PPAF recently and I aim to serve Balochistan even better now. We always supported those who are in dire need, such as survivors of Ziarat earthquake, we stood with the people and we are always supported by the Government of Balochistan, Government of Pakistan, media persons and the people in general”.
The ceremony was attended by high level officials from the Balochistan government and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, and representative of the development organisations working in the region.
PPAF is assisting more than 15,000 ultra-poor households in 3 districts in Balochistan through income generating assets including small transport vehicles, livestock and retail supplies to set up local village shops.
PPAF has dedicated PKR 9 million of its own resources to provide immediate relief assistance to the poorest communities in District Harnai severely affected by the earthquake. The support was provided in response to the need assessment carried out by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the BRSP. The emergency assistance includes food, non-food items (NFIs) and shelter to 100 families in the worst-hit areas in district Harnai.
