|
Introduction |
BRAC, known as Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee, started in 1972 as a small-scale relief and rehabilitation organization, aiding in relief and assistance to resettle refugees from India after Bangladesh's independence. Over the years BRAC has gone through a series of evolution and now it is one of the largest development organizations in the world with a staff size of over 300,000 including part time teachers, volunteers and project staff. In its latest initiative BRAC has started its development activities in Pakistan by launching its microfinance operations initially in the NWFP and Punjab regions with plans to extend these services to Sindh and Baluchistan in the coming months. For this purpose the organization signed an MoU with Government of Pakistan on 2 nd April 2007. More recently, BRAC Pakistan has incorporated itself as a local entity under Section 42 of the Companies Ordinance 1984 and is set to commence its partnership with PPAF.
BRAC has clearly set its vision to be working towards building “a just, enlightened, healthy and democratic Bangladesh free from hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and all forms of exploitation based on age, sex, religion and ethnicity.”

Sungi
Development Founfation (SUNGI)
Sungi Development Foundation is working
in Hazara Division of NWFP since 1989.
Their area of operation lies in 4
districts namely Haripur, Abbottabad,
Mansehra and Battagram. They have done
452 CPI projects during past three years
(1998 – 2000). Most of their beneficiary
communities live in mountainous areas
where lack of basic infrastructure
facilities is major barrier in uplift of
their socio-economic conditions.
Dependence on natural resources (forest
and water) contributes to their
vulnerability to natural calamities like
the recent drought. Hence the need for
sustainable interventions such as
infrastructure, which may enhance their
economic and social conditions has grown
up substantially. Sungi have done
infrastructure projects like
irrigation, link roads, drinking water
supply and sanitation schemes. They have
proposed similar projects to PPAF for
funding.
